The ELD mandate is coming. Are you ready?
What You Need
Yep, we've all heard about it: the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) deadline for the ELD mandate is coming, and now it's a race to become compliant. You need a solution that will fit the bill, but there are many to choose from and after a while they all start to look the same. You may already be very well versed in all of the new Hours of Service (HOS) regulations, or you may still be scratching your head on some of the finer details. Whatever the case, we can help.
What We Have
First of all, we bring to the table a team of experts who have been dealing with this HOS/ELD thing since the ruling came out. We've been working with clients all year on this: we've seen what works and what doesn't, and we've been improving our technique every day. We have thousands of hours of expertise among our members, and we want to be able to use that to benefit you.
We also have what we believe to be the best solution on the market (and that's not just talk--see here for more details). We have hardware and software that speaks for itself and is helping fleets across North America become compliant in time for the mandate deadline.
How It Works
If you already have a MyGeotab solution, you already have most of what you need for Hours of Service. (If you don't have a MyGeotab solution yet, we can help set you up with one; see here for more details.) This, along with the Geotab Drive app, will give you everything you need to be fully compliant by December 18.
Geotab Drive is an application that runs on a tablet or smartphone and acts as the driver's view of his HOS logs. The app is free and available for both Android and iOS operating systems. Geotab Drive and your MyGeotab system work together to give you a Cloud ELD solution that takes away the need to have the GO device hardwired to your tablet or cell phone. This also eliminates any need for device pairing or in-cab wifi connections, which can be less reliable than service through the cloud.
Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs)
Although not required to be electronic like your drivers' logs, the Geotab Drive app comes with the ability to have your drivers prompted to complete both pre-trip and post-trip DVIRs. With this feature built into the system, we can do additional reporting to notify you when defaults are reported or if a driver did not complete his inspection after a trip.
International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)
IFTA reports are also a standard feature recorded and reported in MyGeotab. If you are required to have IFTA reporting, our system automatically separates mileages by state and driver. It also takes into account the few exempt roadways in Massachusetts and New York that would otherwise have to be recorded manually.
What to Look for In An ELD Solution
When searching for the right ELD, it's worthwhile to ask some questions to help make a decision about which is right for your fleet. This is a big investment, and it is good to know the right questions to ask when evaluating any ELD solution. Here are some that we encourage you to ask any company you are investigating during this process, along with the brief version of our answers so that you have an idea of what it is we have to offer.
Will the same device work in any type of vehicle?
Yes, all of our GO units work in all kinds of vehicles.
What is the installation procedure and how long does it take?
Installation is as simple as plugging the device in. For heavy trucks, this requires a harness adapter, but this is typically a very simple installation as well. This saves you time and money in being able to be up and running as soon as you can get them in yourself, without having to hire a professional installer. (We do offer professional installation services if you prefer or require them.)
Is the ELD easy to use?
Yes, our software is designed to be as simple as possible so that your drivers have an easy adjustment to the new digital logs.
Does the ELD support iOS and Android, and can it be used with off-the-shelf devices?
Yes, we support both platforms so that you can be up and running with equipment you may already have.
Is the ELD solution time- or event-based?
Our ELD is event-based, meaning that any time there is a change (in temperature, speed, acceleration, etc.) we are collecting data and sending it to your database. This means that you won't miss potentially-critical information (like an accident) like a time-based solution that might only record data from your vehicles every two minutes or so.
Will your solution remain compliant?
In short, yes. Geotab has dedicated personnel whose job is to ensure that we are compliant. They keep up-to-date on all of the latest regulations so that if there is a change our solution can adapt to meet it.
How easy is it to upgrade?
Easy. Talk to us for more information on the upgrade process.
Is it a Cloud ELD solution?
Yes. We do this to give you a more reliable solution that is compatible with both Android and iOS, and that takes into account conserving the battery life of your phone or tablet as well as consistent coverage of data (our devices are constantly recording data, and will send that to your database whenever they have cellular coverage).
How does the ELD handle DVIRs?
We discussed this above, but this is an important question to ask because it is useful to have a solution that can differentiate between pre- and post-trip DVIRs and inform the fleet manager if any inspections are not completed.
What other features are included with this ELD?
Because the GO device is not just an ELD, we can offer lots of other features beyond that which is required by the new mandate. Aside from the typical vehicle-tracking that a lot of other solutions can do, we also have advanced reporting, accident reconstruction (which can be useful in court cases when proving that your driver is not at fault), and engine diagnostics and fault codes. If you need more than that, we also have a marketplace full of integration partners whose software works with ours to bring you extra features like maintenance management, tire-pressure or temperature monitoring, asset tracking, and much more.
